Anglo Saxon remedy kills hospital superbug MRSA

Take cropleek and garlic, of both equal quantities, pound them well together… take wine and bullocks gall, mix with the leek… let it stand nine days in the brass vessel…

How is it that a thousand years ago, a combination of plant ingredients have such powerful anti-bacterial function?  The individual ingredients, taken alone, do not have this property.  Apparently, there are chemical reactions among the phytochemical that create this effect – but we don’t know what it is.  We may be unlikely to find out as these chemicals are food, not patentable pharmaceutics.
